UN Warns of Rights Concerns Despite Political Progress in Central Africa
Speaking before the UN Security Council, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee noted that recent developments in the sub-region included key elections and advances in institutional reforms, describing them as important milestones in ongoing political processes.
She also pointed to the role of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), saying the regional organization has demonstrated “encouraging signs” of its commitment to sustaining peace across member states.
However, she cautioned that these improvements are unfolding alongside a concerning backdrop marked by worsening security conditions, humanitarian pressures, and economic strain in several countries.
Pobee further warned of a “worrying trend” involving increasing restrictions on civil and political freedoms in parts of the region, underscoring the fragility of the current gains despite recent progress.
