Russia’s FM Spokeswoman Says Ultraliberal Political Model of West Reaches “Civilizational Dead End”
Speaking during a discussion on Europe’s future at an international economic forum in St. Petersburg, Zakharova said that a framework historically associated with “freedom, democracy, and human rights” is now confronting serious ideological challenges and struggling to maintain those values within its own societies.
”We are witnessing the civilizational dead end of an ultraliberal model that only yesterday claimed to literally teach and reprogram the entire world,” she said. “Today, this model cannot even guarantee the declared rights of its own citizens.”
According to Zakharova, political groups, media figures, and civic organizations in several Western European countries increasingly encounter difficulties when expressing views that differ from prevailing political positions. “Either you keep quiet, or you go to jail,” she said.
She further argued that the expansion of the internet weakened what she described as the West’s dominance over the global flow of information. In response, she claimed, authorities have increasingly relied on large technology platforms to limit alternative viewpoints. Zakharova also warned that artificial intelligence could become the next phase of what she called a growing “digital dictatorship.”
Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, many Western governments introduced extensive restrictions on Russian state-affiliated media outlets. According to reports, content from several Russian media organizations was removed or limited across major online platforms. Before those measures were introduced, one such broadcaster had accumulated roughly 30 million subscribers on YouTube.
Debates surrounding censorship, free speech, and limitations on public discourse have also contributed to growing support for conservative and nationalist political movements in a number of Western countries. Parties in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands have expanded their voter base by criticizing established political institutions, mainstream media organizations, and government policies related to issues such as immigration and national sovereignty.
